„İster beğenin, ister beğenmeyin, kent sizi kendisini yeniden yaratmaya, içinde yaşayabileceğiniz bir kalıba dökmeye davet eder. Kendinizi de. Kim olduğunuza bir karar verin, kent çevrenizde yine sabit bir biçim alacaktır. Onun ne olduğuna bir karar verin, bir nirengi noktasına göre çizilmiş bir harita gibi, sizin kimliğiniz ortaya çıkacaktır.
Köylerden ve küçük kasabalardan farklı olarak, yoğurulabilir olmak, kentlerin doğasından gelir. Onları kendi hakkımızdaki fikirlerimizle yoğururuz, biz onlara kendi kişisel biçimimizi dayattığımızda gösterdikleri dirençle onlar da bu kez bizi biçimlendirirler. Bu anlamda, bana öyle geliyor ki, kentte yaşamak bir sanattır. Kentsel yaşamın sürekli yaratıcı oyununda, insan ile madde arasındaki özel ilişkiyi betimlemede sanatın, uslubun sözlüğüne ihtiyaç vardır.
Hayal ettiğimiz biçimiyle kent, yanılsamaların, efsanelerin, özlemlerin, karabasanların yumuşak kenti, haritalarda ve istatistiklerde, kentsel sosyoloji, demografi ve mimari monografilerinde varolan katı kent kadar, hatta belki daha da fazla gerçektir.”

“… die Stadt wird weich, wird gefügig; und wartete darauf eine Identität zu bekommen. Ob Du es magst oder nicht, die Stadt lädt Dich dazu ein, sie zu verändern, sie in eine Form zu giessen in der du leben möchtest. Du auch. Entscheide erst wer du bist, die Stadt wird dann die passende Form (für dich) einnehmen. Entscheide was es ist, und deine eigene Identität wird sich preisgeben, wie ein bestimmter Vermessungspunkt auf einer Karte.
Ganz anders wie in den Dörfern und kleinen Ortschaften, wird die Stadt durch das städtische Einkommen geformt. Dieses wird durch unsere Ideen geformt. Erst als Form des Widerstandes, formt es dann uns. Dadurch wird das Stadtleben, denke ich, zur Kunst; um diese spezielle Beziehung zwischen Substanz und Mensch zu beschreiben, müssen wir uns dem Vokabular der Kunst bedienen. Nur dadurch können wir das creative Spiel des städtischen Alltags beschreiben.
Die Stadt, wie wir sie uns vorstellen, die weiche, gefügige, Stadt – die Stadt der Illusion, der Fiktion und Legende, der Aspirationen und Alpträume, ist genauso realistisch, vielleicht sogar realistischer, als die harte, schwierige, Stadt die man aus Statistiken und aus Büchern über urbane Soziologie, Demographie und Architektur kennt.”

Decide who you are, and the city will again assume a fixed form around you. Decide what it is, and your own identity will be revealed, like a position on a map fixed by triangulation.
Unlike in villages and small towns, the cities can be kneaded by the nature of urban incomes. We can knead them with our ideas. we show them, we impose them our own personal form of resistance and they shape us this time. In this sense, it seems to me, to live in the city is an art. In order to describe the special relationship between the substance and the human, we need the dictionary of art at the creative everyday game of urban life.
The city as we imagine it, the soft city of illusion, myth, aspiration, nightmare, is as real, maybe more real, than the hard city one can locate on maps in statistics, in monographs on urban sociology and demography and architecture.”
